10 Pin-Worthy Kid Activities for Summer

Is there anything better than summer when you’re a kid?  Long days, homework-free nights, lots of fresh air… perfect, right?  And the list of things to do goes on and on…

Until 2 days into summer vacation, when apparently your child feels they’ve exhausted everything summer has to offer, and comes up to you and announces, “I have nothing to do.”

I have been prepping myself for summer for a while now, knowing that having my 3, shall we say, “conflict-prone” daughters home with me, all day every day, was going to be a slight test of sanity.  And so, for the past few months, I’ve been hoarding away various kid-friendly activity ideas that I think the kids might get a kick out of, and will hopefully get me a few minutes reprieve from my duties as referee.

Each image links over to SavingStar’s board on Pinterest, where I’ve gathered these all up for your repinning pleasure.  If you click on the image in Pinterest, you’ll get to the original website with each project.  Happy Summer!

1.  Glow Lantern

Cut open a glow stick and pour the contents into a jar, put the lid on and shake – glow stick lantern! Add glitter or water to change the effect! (original source: http://www.lilblueboo.com/2011/07/glow-stick-lanterns.html)

2.  Ocean in a Bottle

Sand, water, small shells, blue food coloring and baby or mineral oil in a plastic bottle. Glue or tape the lid on tight! (original source: http://www.dealiciousmom.com/ocean-in-a-bottle-craft/)

3.  Secret Messages

Write secret messages on white paper with white crayon, then paint over with watercolors to reveal! (original source: http://www.education.com/activity/article/magic-art-write-magic-messages/)

4.  Crayon Recycling

Use up all those stubby crayon pieces to make new custom crayons! Just make sure to peel all the wrappers off first.  (original source: http://www.flickr.com/photos/61951289@N08/5672821563/sizes/l/in/photostream/)

5.  Pipe Cleaner Magnet Bottle

Cut up pipe cleaners into 1″ pieces, drop in plastic bottle and seal tight. Hand your child a strong magnet and voila – instant entertainment.  My almost-3-year-old loved this one. (original cource: http://pre-schoolplay.blogspot.com/2011/09/discovery-bottles.html)

6. Kool-Aid-Colored Play Dough

Making it might be just as fun as playing with it. Safe if eaten, though it does NOT taste like Kool-Aid. :) (original source: http://coupon-wizards.com/kool-aid-playdough/)

7.  I-Spy Bottle

Take an empty bottle, some random little household items, and some rice, pasta, sand, or other filler, and combine away. Make sure you make a list of what went inside! (original source: http://www.meetthedubiens.com/2010/11/i-spy-bottles.html)

8.  Ice Eggs

Cool off and play archaeologist at the same time! Fill water balloons with water and a small plastic toy, tie and freeze. (original source: http://alittlelearningfortwo.blogspot.com/2011/09/ice-eggs.html)

9.  Window Markers

My kids LOVE these! Wipes off easily with water or window cleaner.  Also a great way to decorate for birthdays and holidays. They actually come out looking better than this picture shows… especially the yellow and white markers. (original source: http://www.happylittlemesses.com/?p=2202)

10.  Exploding Soap

Put a whole bar (or chunks of a bar) of Ivory soap in the microwave on high for 2 minutes, and hit stop when it looks like this.  We tried this one for the first time the other night, and it was a hoot.  And a hit.  Great way to kick off bathtime!
